CNC Machining Center Setup and Operation The primary goal of this course is to help you learn enough about CNC machining center setup and operation that you can secure an entry level position with a CNC-using company. If you're already working for a CNC using company, the secondary goal is to increase your level of knowledge about CNC machining center usage. If you're currently working as a CNC operator (not setting up machines), this course will show you what it takes to step into a setup person's position.
Instructor Mike Lynch is President of CNC Concepts, Inc., a supplier of training materials and computer software products to users of CNC equipment. Over the past 22 years, he has held a number of positions as tool designer, CNC programmer, NC analyst, and CNC operations manager for firms such as GTE Automatic Electric, Rockwell International, Cincinnati Milacron, and KGK International Corporation. He also teaches CNC Machining Center Programming, CNC Turning Center Programming and Parametric Programming For CNC Machining & Turning Centers for UniversalClass.
Earn a certificate (both hard copy and electronic) upon successful completion (additional charges apply). UniversalClass™ offers many wonderful learning tools to help you get the most out of your online course,

Course Description
This class will present the concepts related to machining center setup and operation.
CNC machining centers are among the most popular metal-cutting machine tools in use today. Almost every company that manufactures any metal products has more than one - and is constantly searching for qualified people to run them. To fully master the use of a CNC machining center, a person must become proficient in three distinct skills - programming, setup, and completing production runs. This class addresses two of the three; setting up a machining center and how to complete a production run (another class is available for helping you learn CNC machining center programming).
Special requirement: Note that you need to have two software viewers (Microsoft PowerPoint Viewer and Adobe Acrobat Reader) installed on your computer before you can view material presented in the lessons. Both of these viewers are freely distributed and can be downloaded from our website (www.cncci.com). From the navigation buttons on our website, click SERVICES and then click ON-LINE COURSES. The two viewers can be found at the bottom of this page.
Course Lessons
Lesson 1: Tasks related to setup and operation
In this lesson we introduce the tasks related to making setups and running production. Included: tasks required for setting up machining centers in the approximate order setups are made and tasks required to run production.
Lesson 2: Machine configurations
It is important for setup people and operators to understand the makeup of the machine they work on. Included: Components, directions of motion (axes), controllable functions, and buttons & switches.
Lesson 3: Workholding setup
Workholding setup is an important setup-related task. Included: the machine table, workholding devices, aligning workholding devices with the machine table, and assigning program zero.
Lesson 4: Cutting tools
There are several cutting-tool-related tasks that must be completed during setup. Included: understanding cutting tool components, gathering, assembling, and entering cutting tool components, entering offsets, and sizing and trial machining.
Lesson 5: Running the first workpiece
Setup includes running the first workpiece. Topics include: loading the program, verifying the correctnes of the program (new programs), considering what each tool will do, and re-running tools.
Lesson 6: Completing a production run
Completing a production run involve many of the same tasks done during setup. Included: Optimizing the job, tasks related to the production run, running one workpiece, sizing adjustments, and replacing dull tools
