Course Description

This course explains what counseling is and what a career in counseling requires. If you are thinking about a career in counseling this course is for you. Trying to distinguish between a psychologist, a psychiatrist and a family therapist can be confusing. Here is where you will understand what counseling is and what a career in counseling requires.

This course will help you to understand the training involved in being a counselor. You will get an opportunity to examine some of your own characteristics and how they fit into the role of a counselor. It explains some of the different approaches to counseling such as behavioral, psychodynamic and humanistic. In addition it describes different environments in which counseling is applied.

Course Requirements

There are no pre-requirements for this course. An interest in the field of counseling and a willingness to read and complete the course satisfactorily are expected.

Course Goals

At the end of the course the student will:
have a better understand of what is involved in being a counselor.
have information on the basic theories of counseling.
be better able to decide if a career in counseling is suitable and desirable.

Course Materials

There are no required texts for the course, however here are a few suggested textbooks that might be helpful.
1. Theory and practice of counseling and psychotherapy. by Gerald Corey. (6th ed)
2. Six key approaches to counseling and therapy. by Richard Nelson-Jones.
3. Introduction to therapeutic counseling:voices from the field. by Jeffrey A. Kottler and Robert W. Brown. In addition I will recommend a number of websites for further reading and exploring.

Grading Policy

This is a self-paced course that you are taking for your own interest and enhancement. Therefore emphasis should not be on grades. However whenever we undertake a task we want to do our best and need some form of assessment to be sure that we are in fact working to our fullest potential.
There will be assignments for each lesson and 2 additional tests/quizzes. The quizzes will be graded on 100 point scale. The assignments will be used to supplement and upgrade your score where necessary. As long as you complete each lesson and exercise you should pass the course.
You will be given the opportunity to re-take tests if your score is low.
