Course Description
This course is designed for those who consider writing nonfiction for kids a creative venture. It is designed to help the writer sell two types of short fillers that abound in children's magazines: crafts and recipes. A short segment also will concern writing up cute kid sayings for adult markets. The student will learn how to build an Idea Bank to work from, how to study a magazine and build a market list for each writing. Marketing strategies and basic manuscript format will be covered. Students will leave the class with 15 "tidbit" writings ready to market--and enough ideas to keep them busy writing for months.
Course Requirements
This course is open to beginning writers as well as to authors with published credits.
This course requires students to 1) complete and submit all lesson components, 2) participate in class discussions, and 3) check in with the instructor at least once a week. The course is self-paced, but Universal Classes removes students after 120 days of inactivity.
Course Goals
The goal of the class will be for student publication before or shortly after completion.
Reading Materials
Most reading materials will be provided through class netlinks or uploaded documents. Outside magazine and market study reading will be required.
Grading Policy
Grading will be based point scale. Generally, grades are valued as follows: tests/20 points, class participation/10 points, assignments/70 points.
