Course Description

Introduction to Accounting and Finance - all materials included (no text required!).  For students, managers, supervisors, business owners, professionals, administrative staff including those from non-financial backgrounds. Learn accounting terminology, standard practices, understand financial reports and how to measure profitability. Learn the importance of auditing, Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and the value of external financial reports. We also cover inventory management (LIFO, FIFO and Weighted Average), basic cost accounting and fixed assets (including depreciation methods). An introduction to budgeting and the importance of budgets is also covered. This course is taught in 'layman's terms' and will give a basic understanding of accounting and finance techniques used in daily operations. This class is for those who want to learn about accounting and have an impact on their firm's profitability whether or not you want to pursue an accounting degree. Online course--the course fee includes online textbook, assignments and numerous Excel templates related to the accounting field. We have also added a discussion forum to openly discuss accounting scandals, Sarbanes-Oxley (SOX) and ethical issues in accounting.

Course Goals

To give students a basic understanding of accounting and finance. Additionally, the student will understand financial statements and basic profitability analysis.

Accounting for Non-Financial Managers, by Stephen Finkle (1997). Lectures and other materials written by Thomas Fisher

Grading Policy

70% or higher to pass open book exam. Based on 20 multiple choice questions worth 5 points each.
