Course Description

Welcome to the online tutorial of Microsoft Word.

No matter what kind of document you need to create- a simple memo or a 500-page document- MS word can certainly handle it and make you look proud in the process. This tutorial will be dealing with the basics of MS word. This course will make your fundamentals very strong.

Microsoft word is very easy to use. This tutorial has thirty chapters, which deal in detail about the various features of MS word. Since this is a basic course, it is not at all complex, instead it is very easy to learn and grasp. This course is filled with pictures and images which acts like a catalyst to aid even an amateur to grasp MS Word quickly and thoroughly.

This is a self-paced course. There is no time-limit for this course. Normally, students complete this course within three months of time.

What's new?!! This course is now updated to Word 2003. So anyone with the versions of word from 1997 through 2003 can benefit from it.

Course Requirements

Microsoft Word (any version from 1997 through 2003) should be installed on your system. Familiarity with Computers and the Windows Software. No prior knowledge of MS Word is required.

Reading Materials

The course material provided in this course is very much sufficient. If you want to explore in depth the various other features of word, then there are list of books provided in the "Class NetLinks" section. Please check it out.

Grading Policy

The grading policy is based on percentage and not on letter grades.

The following certificates will be awarded:

1. Certificate of Attendence for visiting the class for five different days.
2. Certificate of Academic Excellence for achieving a grade of 70% or more.
3. Certificate of Class Participation for posting at least five technical messages in the class discussion forums.
4. Certificate of Outstanding Achievement for completing all the assignments and lessons in the class.

Course Organization and Content

1. Parts of the Screen

This Chapter being an introductory Chapter, makes you comfortable with the various parts of the screen.

2. Drop-Down Menus

This Chapter is an extension of the previous chapter. You'll learn in-depth about drop-down menus in this chapter.

3. Getting Help

In this chapter you'll learn how to get help in Word using the Office Assistant. You'll also learn a few tips and tricks.

4. Groundwork in Word - Part I

This Chapter describes about entering, selecting, deleting, copying, and pasting the text. You'll also learn to save the file, close the document, and close the Word program.

5. Groundwork in Word - Part II

This will be a continuation of the previous chapter where you'll learn about the Undo and Redo features, print preview, printing a document, retrieving a file, opening a new blank document, and viewing the document like a notebook.

6. Searching and Replacing Text

In this chapter you'll learn how to find and replace a text. You'll also learn about the "Go to" feature.

7. Header, Footer, and Screen Display

In this chapter you'll learn how to insert and delete headers and footers, and add page numbers. You'll also learn about screen display.

8. Formatting Techniques - Part I

In this chapter you'll learn how to change the font size, color, style etc. You'll also learn to provide character spacing, and text effects.

9. Formatting Techniques - Part II

This chapter teaches you how to apply color to the background of a document.

10. Formatting Techniques - Part III

In this chapter you'll learn about the format painter feature. You'll also learn to format paragraphs.

11. Formatting Techniques - Part IV

In this chapter you'll learn to create bulleted and numbered lists. You'll also learn to change case, insert a file, arrange text in columns, and about the drop cap feature.

12. Spelling and Grammar

This Chapter describes how to check the spelling and grammar of your document. This Chapter also covers in detail about thesaurus, AutoCorrect, and similar features.

13. Fundamentals of Tables - Part I

In this chapter you'll learn to insert a table, use the preset table formats, erase a row or column, insert additional rows or columns, and delete a row, column or an entire table.

14. Fundamentals of Tables - Part II

This chapter teaches you how to select a row, column, or a table, merge cells and more.

15. Split Cells

This chapter teaches you how to split a cell into multiple rows and columns.

16. Distributing Rows and Columns Evenly

This chapter teaches you how to make the dimensions of the rows and columns same using the Distribute Rows and Distribute Columns Evenly feature.

17. Playing with Tables

In this chapter you'll learn how to convert a table to text and vice versa. You'll also learn about the sort feature.

18. Formula, Text Direction, and Borders

This lesson will teach you how to apply formulas and perform calculations, change the text direction, and apply borders.

19. Table Properties

This lesson will teach you various manipulations that can be performed on a cell or table.

20. Borders

In this chapter you'll learn to apply borders to a table, cell, paragraph and a lot more stuffs.

21. Page Border and Shading

This chapter teaches you how to add a colorful page border. You'll also learn to apply shading to a cell, table, paragraph and a lot more.

22. Drawing Toolbar and Basics of AutoShapes

This chapter will teach you about turning on and off the drawing toolbar and the usage of it, while creating AutoShapes.

23. More on Graphics and AutoShapes - Part I

You'll learn about copy-pasting a graphic and more about AutoShapes.

24. More on Graphics and AutoShapes - Part II

This chapter teaches you to insert a clip to your document and resize a graphic.

25. ClipArt

This lesson will teach you how to insert a clipart to your document.

26. Playing with Graphics - Part I

In this chapter you'll learn the various ways that you can format a picture.

27. Playing with Graphics - Part II

This chapter will be a continuation of the previous chapter. Make sure you have read the previous chapter. This chapter deals with the various graphic manipulation with text.

28. Text Box and Cool Features for AutoShapes

By the end of this chapter, you'll be able to create a text box and format it. You'll also learn to use some of the cool features for AutoShapes.

29. Shadow and 3-D Effects for AutoShapes

In this chapter you'll learn to provide shadow and 3-D effects to AutoShapes in detail.

30. WordArt

All you ever wanted to know about WordArt will be dealt in this chapter.
