Course Description
Algebra 1A is designed for those students, young or old, who need a thorough course in Algebra 1 or introductory algebra. The students may ask questions by email on all lessons or problems in the class.
I personally answer all email daily. Few online classes offer this service.
This online course is equivalent to 1 semester of high school Algebra 1 or 1/2 of Introductory Algebra in college. There is a sequel to this class, Algebra 1B. The same book is used; no need to buy another. These two courses will well prepare the student for an algebra college course.
This class is very comprehensive; there are 30 lessons and 6 tests in Algebra 1A.

Susan Johnsey.
I am a state certified teacher with 30+ years of experience and I have a Master's degree in Mathematics from the University of Alabama in Birmingham. I also have 21 semester hours of post-graduate work. I have been teaching online classes for 4 years.
Course Requirements
Good arithmetic skills are needed and an understanding of signed numbers prior to beginning this course must be attained. (without the use of a calculator)
The class is self paced.
The student needs to commit at least 4 hours a week to the class. The student must use a word processor, such as Microsoft Word or Notepad or WordPerfect, to submit work to the web site classroom and also be able to check their email after each assignment is submitted. Thus the student must be able to type, save files, navigate a web site, and use email to take an online class. The student must have a dependable email address that can be checked regularly with ease.
Course Goals
When one completes this online course and its sequel, Algebra 1B, they will be very well prepared for Algebra 2 or Intermediate College Algebra. The student will also be prepared for several types of job placement tests.
Math is a process that requires logic and problem solving abilities. Rules of math build upon each other. Understanding or memorizing rules is not sufficient. You must be able to use them well to successfully move ahead. Some people learn quickly and some do not, but all need practice.
For this reason I have chosen a textbook (it has been in publication for over 15 years) that is excellent for several reasons. It contains hundreds of examples and thousands of problems to work. For all examples, the answers and the steps to work the problem are given. The answers to all odd problems are also given. At the end of each chapter is a review and a test. The answers to these are also given. The organization and layout of the book is excellent. The latest edition of this book is used in several universities. I use the 5th or 6th edition which can still be found on the internet at a used book price. Sometimes the books are slightly used; sometimes they are almost new with varied prices between $20 to $35 that is including shipping.
Most colleges offer this class, but do not give college credit for it. Why pay an enormous price for a class for which you can not receive credit? The knowledge of Algebra 1 is what you need so that you may then enter into a college credit algebra class. This class is very affordable and will be well worth your money.
Reading Materials
The latest edition of the textbook is used in several universties. I use the 5th or 6th edition which can still be found on the internet at a used book price. Sometimes the books are slightly used sometimes they are almost new with varied prices between $10 and $35, that is including shipping.
After joining the class the info will be made available about purchasing the correct book. You must have the ISBN number.
The students will read the online lessons and the corresponding material in their textbook. Each lesson will require problems in the book to be completed and checked. A homework assignment, at least 10 problems for each lesson, must be submitted to the instructor for grading. At the end of each series of lessons a test will be given.
Grading Policy
90 to 100 is given a grade of A
80 to 89 is given a grade of B
73 to 79 is given a grade of C
D's and F's are not given because work below a level of C must be resubmitted.
The student may check his/her progress at anytime at the classroom or by contacting the instructor.
Students submit assignments, each worth 20 points. Each lesson requires 1 or 2 assignments to be submitted. Most assignments have 10 or less problems. At the end of each of the 6 chapters, the student will take an online test; each test is worth 100 points.
Grades and teacher comments are sent by email daily. There is a grade report in the classroom also.

MATH IN A BOX
I offer a free placement test there.
You may go as fast as you like. Each of my online lessons make recommendations for the pages you are to read and the problems you are to work in the textbook so that you prepared for each assignment that I will give you online. When you have completed the textbook reading and the problems (you decide how much you need to do- can be more or less than what I recommend) you must complete the short assignments at Universalclass.
You should treat these assignments like
mini-tests. When you have successfully completed all the assignments for a series of lessons(1 chapter) and have used the test in the textbook to study and review, you must then take the test I will provide you online. Your grade will be determined by your
assignment and test scores.
You may email me when you need help. Always be specific with your question, that is, tell me the problem or example you are working. I am available everyday by email and I check my email 2 to 5 times a day.
I am a stay at home mom. I tutor several students each week and I teach (part-time)at the local community college and/or at the Excelsior Home School Co-op. I teach all ages and all topics of math from 1st grade to college calculus.
