Course Description

This course will deliver knowledge on the inclusion of students with autism, and will provide guidance and instruction in areas such as teacher attitudes, preparation and effective instructional practices. In addition, it is designed to provide teachers with skills they need to make inclusion of students with autism successful.

Course Requirements

Complete the required readings, assignments, tests, quizzes, surveys and class polls.

The content needed to complete the course successfully is in the lessons. The readings supplement that material to add to your understanding. Upon successful completion of the course, you are eligible for 3.0 Continuing Education Units (CEUs) from the American Council of Education and a Unviersalclass.com Certificate.

Course Goals

The course covers:
(a) central features of effective inclusion education programs;
(b) research involving teachers' and administrators' attitudes towards students with autism;
(c) collaborative partnerships between general and special education teachers;
(d) knowledge about effective teacher communication;
(e) strategies for parental preparation for school, transition and other segments of life;
(f) types of planning and factors involved in planning;
(g) effective instructional inclusive strategies such as functional instruction, meaningful reinforcement, and peer support;
(h) performance- based and portfolio assessment and how it can be used;
and (i) IDEA 97 and its impact of the disciplinary policies of students with disabilities.

Reading Materials

Specific readings will be provided after every lecture. Students are responsible for linking onto the particular website.

Grading Policy

Students will be graded on assignments, tests, quizzes, and participation.
