Course Description
This geometry course is designed for those students, young or old, who need a thorough course in Geometry. This online course is equivalent to the first semester of high school geometry. The class and its sequel, Geometry (second semester) will prepare you well for Algebra 2 and Precalculus.
The topics to be studied include :
basic geometric figures,
deductive reasoning and proofs,
postulates and theorems for parallel lines and planes,
corollaries and theorems for congruent triangles,
properties and theorems for quadrilaterals,
inequalities of triangles, and polygons.
A particular geometry textbook is required for the course. It is used in many high schools in the US.
The student may work at his own pace.
He may begin at any time.
Each day that an assignment or test is submitted by the student he will receive his grade and corrections within a few hours by email. The instructor, Susan Johnsey, is available daily for questions and to grade your work.
Your scores and answers to your questions are answered daily and returned to you by email. Be sure your email address is valid and easy for you to check.
If you have questions then please contact me, SUSAN JOHNSEY, at web-request@universalclass.com. I am a highly qualified teacher in the area of math and the book that I have selected is used in many high schools throughout the U.S.
- If you are a high school student that needs to review or move ahead in math then please consider my classes.
- If you are planning to attend college and need to review your geometry then consider my online classes.

Course Requirements
The student will have to purchase the textbook, a compass , protactor and straight edge for the class. The student also must KNOW Algebra 1. Many concepts taught in Algebra 1 are used throughout this class. If you are not sure of your algebra knowledge then please take my placement test for Algebra 1B at my web site, .
The class is self paced , but the student needs to commit at least 4 hours a week to the class.
The student must use a word processor, such as Microsoft Word or Notepad, to submit work to the web site classroom and also be able to check their email after each assignment is submitted. You should be able to type, save files, navigate a web site, and use email to take an online class. It is also helpful to have a basic Paint program. We will draw lines, angles and triangles.
It is imperative that a student have an email address that is easy for them to check regularly after submitting an Assignment, a Test ,or questions.
Course Goals
The class and its sequel, Geometry (second semester) will prepare you well for Algebra 2 and Precalculus. If you have already completed high school and need Precalculus or Calculus in college then this class will prepare you for the geometry and trigonometry topics included in those classes.
Course content:
FIRST SEMESTER:
Points, Lines, Planes, and Angles
DEDUCTIVE REASONING
PARALLEL LINES AND PLANES
CONGRUENT TRIANGLES
QUADRILATERALS
INEQUALITIES IN GEOMETRY
SECOND SEMESTER: (next course)
SIMILAR POLYGONS
RIGHT TRIANGLES
CIRCLES
AREAS of Plane Figures
AREAS AND VOLUMES OF SOLIDS
COORDINATE GEOMETRY
TRANSFORMATIONS
The students will read the online lessons and the corresponding material in their textbook. Each lesson will require problems in the book to be completed and checked. A homework assignment, at least 10 to 15 problems for each lesson, must be submitted to the instructor for grading. At the end of each series of lessons a test will be given. Each semester will have 6 tests and approximately 50 assignments.
Course Materials
The required textbook is used throughout the United States. The book is Geometry by Jurgensen, Brown and Jugensen. It is published by McDougal Littell. It can be found as a new book or as a used book. The price should be under $50. Please contact me for the ISBN number. You must have it to order the correct book since there are many geometry books printed each year. You may find the book information at my personal website. Look for the online class textbook link on my HOME page. . The student will also need a compass, protractor and straight edge.
Grading Policy
90 to 100 is given a grade of A
80 to 89 is given a grade of B
73 to 79 is given a grade of C
D's and F's are not given because work below a level of C must be resubmitted.
The student may check his/her progress at anytime at the classroom or by contacting the instructor.
Students submit assignments, each worth 20 points. Most lessons require 1 or 2 assignments to be submitted. Most assignments have 15 or less problems. At the end of each of the 6 chapters, the student will take an online test; each test is worth 100 points. Assignment and Test grades, and teacher comments or replies are sent by email daily. You should have these within 24 hours of your submitting them.
