Course Description

MS Excel is a very powerful spreadsheet program which enables you to organize data, compare them, or even represent them graphically. Excel application is used extensively in businesses, educational institutions, etc. to maintain and systematize data. That does not mean that excel is confined only for business purposes. It is very helpful for personal purposes to maintain simple household records.

This is a basic and intermediate course in MS Excel. This online course incorporates pictorial representations to make your understanding scrupulous and uncomplicated as compared to lengthy explanations. You don't need to have any prior knowledge about excel. Basic working knowledge of computers should suffice.

Course Requirements

Microsoft Office Excel 2003 software and Basic working knowledge of computers are the main requirements for this course. You don't need to have any prior knowledge of Excel.

Grading Policy

Grading will be done on a percentage basis. The total percentage that can be scored is 100%.
Students will be awarded a "Certificate of Academic Excellence" for achieving a grade of 70% or higher. Students will be awarded a "Certificate of Outstanding Achievement" for completing all the quizzes and assignments required for this course.

Course Organization and Topics Covered

1. Getting Familiarized with the Excel Interface

In this lesson, you'll learn to launch the excel application, the look of the excel window, and the parts and functions of the excel window.

2. Drop-Down Menus and Getting Help

This lesson will teach you a few things about the drop-down menus. You'll also learn the different ways to get help from the excel program.

3. Data Entering and Saving a Workbook

In this lesson, you'll learn to choose a worksheet, few points to be noted before entering data, moving around the worksheet, entering text and numbers, saving a workbook and lot more.

4. Opening a Workbook and Selection Techniques

This lesson will teach you to open an existing workbook, open a new workbook, select a row, column, single cell, range of cells, worksheet and a lot more.

5. Data Operations - Part I

By the end of this lesson, you'll know how to select text or numbers, edit the data, and duplicate the cell contents.

6. Data Operations - Part II

The topics dealt in this lesson would be to move the cell contents and to delete the cell contents.

7. AutoFill Feature

In this lesson you'll learn about the AutoFill feature which enables you to save time while entering months, weekdays, dates, numbers, etc. in a series.

8. Column Manipulation

This lesson deals in detail about the different methods to change the column width.

9. Text Wrap and Shrink to Fit Feature

As the title suggests, this lesson deals with the Text Wrap and the Shrink to Fit feature in Excel.

10. Working with Rows

In this lesson, you'll learn to change the row height, insert single and multiple rows, delete single and multiple rows and more.

11. Working with Columns and Rows

This lesson will teach you to insert and delete single and multiple columns. You'll also learn to hide and unhide rows and columns.

12. Print Preview and Print

The topics dealt in this lesson are print preview, print, print range, number of copies, collate, printing active sheet(s), workbook, selected area and lot more.

13. Formatting the Contents of a Cell - Part I

This lesson will teach you to change the font face, font style, font size, underline, shortcut methods to do the same and a lot more.

14. Formatting the Contents of a Cell - Part II

This lesson is the continuation of the previous lesson. Here, you'll learn to color the contents of a cell, text effects like strikethrough, superscript, and subscript. You'll also learn to align the contents of a cell.

15. Data and Cell Formatting

This lesson will teach you to slant the contents of a cell and merge the cells. You'll also learn about the format painter feature.

16. Applying Background Color and Border to a Cell

As the title suggests, this lesson teaches you how to apply a background color and a border to a cell.

17. Screen Manipulation

In this lesson, you'll learn to freeze a row and a column, unfreeze panes, split screen horizontally and vertically, and remove the split screen.

18. Headers, Footers, and Printout Knick-Knacks

This lesson covers topics like adding headers and footers and displaying the gridlines, row, and column headings on a printout.

19. Managing Worksheets - Part I

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to insert additional worksheets, delete and rename worksheets and more.

20. Managing Worksheets - Part II

This lesson is a continuation of the previous lesson. In this lesson, you'll learn to move a worksheet to a different location, make a copy of a worksheet, group, and ungroup worksheets.

21. AutoFormat and Spell Check

As the title suggests, this lesson deals in detail about AutoFormat and Spell Check.

22. AutoCorrect Options

This will be a detailed lesson about AutoCorrect Options.

23. Essentials of AutoShapes

In this lesson, you'll learn to add, select, deselect, resize, rotate, move, copy, and delete an AutoShape. You'll also learn to add and edit the text of the AutoShape.

24. Dress up the AutoShape

This lesson will teach you to format the AutoShape and to add the shadow and 3-D effect to the AutoShape.

25. WordArt and Text Box

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to insert, select, deselect, copy-paste, resize, move, delete, format, and edit the text of a WordArt and Text box.

26. Inserting a ClipArt and a Picture

This lesson will teach you to insert, select, de-select, resize, copy-paste, move, and delete a ClipArt and a picture.

27. Introducing Currency Sign and Sorting of Data

In this lesson, you'll learn to prefix a currency sign to a numeric data. You'll also learn to sort the data in an ascending and descending fashion.

28. Fundamentals of Formulas

Topics covered in this lesson include basic calculations, editing formulas, complex formulas, and more.

29. Named Ranges

This lesson will teach you the rules for naming a range, naming a cell or a range of cells, using a range name in a formula, and deleting the range name.

30. Rudiments of Charts

By the end of this lesson, you'll be able to enter the data and create a chart using that data.

31. Manipulate and Format the Chart
